We had the pleasure of attending a talk by Preston Scott Cohen at CCA last night. He exhibited several projects (Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Ordos House, Nanjing Performing Arts Center, etc) and discussed the processes and philosophies behind them. He also talked about a few of his guiding principles, including the creation of site constraints where none are present.
I particularly liked his suggestion that designers tend to overvalue intentionality at the start of a project, as opposed to interpretation at its conclusion. While the former might be more logical, the latter allows for more rigorous exploration, and the possibility of discovery.
